Zamioculcas, together with Sansevieria and Pothos form what we affectionately call the perfect triad: Three hardy indoor plantsbeautiful and easy to manage, ideal for those approaching the world of greenery at home for the first time.
In addition to being almost indestructible, Zamioculcas is a perfect plant for those who want to experiment: it lends itself well to propagation and adapts without problems to many environments, from apartments to offices.

1. Low light tolerance

One of the most appreciated features of this one house plant it’s his ability to live even with little light. Environments such as entrance halls, dark entrances or condominium staircases are not a problem for her. However, if placed in a bright area but not exposed to direct sun, Zamioculcas will grow faster and with more developed leaves.

2. Drought resistance

Zamioculcas develops fleshy tubers under the soil, which allow it to store water and withstand long periods without watering. It is therefore the ideal plant for those forget to waterfor the most distracted or for those who are often away from home.

Origins and curiosities about Zamioculcas

Zamioculcas zamiifolia is one evergreen tropical plant native to East Africa, particularly the regions of Tanzania and Kenya. It was first described in 1826 as Caladium zamiifolio and, only in the 20th century, was it assigned to the genre Zamioculcas.

In the 1990s, Dutch floriculture began large-scale production, making it one of the most popular indoor plants. Many also know it by curious names such as «Zanzibar Gem», «Emerald Plant» or even «Padre Pio Plant» (even if the connection remains a mystery!).

How to take care of Zamioculcas

THE Zamioculcas zamiifolia it is famous for its robustness, but with a little more attention it can really give its best. Let’s see together how to best care for it at home or in the office, even if you are a beginner with plants.

1. Light and exposure

One of Zamioculcas’ best qualities is hers low light tolerancebut for more luxuriant growth, I recommend placing it in one spot bright with diffused light.
Avoid direct exposure to the sun in the central hours of the day, especially in summer: the risk is that the leaves will burn.

If during the summer you decide to move it outdoors, find a corner for it bright shadowsafe from air currents strong.

2. Ideal temperature

Zamioculcas prefers temperatures between 18°C and 25°C.
It drops below 15°C with difficulty and below 12°C it can begin to suffer seriously, risking irreversible damage.

THE higher temperatures they stimulate faster growth, but be careful: in summer, avoid heat stroke and places that are too closed and muggy.

3. Watering and substrate

This plant does not like water stagnation. Water only when the soil is completely dry, e.g always empty the saucer to prevent the rhizomes from rotting.

In winter, if the plant is placed in a low-light area, this is possible drastically reduce wateringsometimes even suspending them completely for weeks.

As for the soil, I recommend choosing a well-draining substrate: mixes are fine for succulent plantsor ours One more based on peat, coconut and pumicewhich offers the right balance between drainage and water retention.

4. Repotting and propagation

Zamioculcas does not need to be repotted often. Better to proceed only when the roots have filled the pot to the point of deforming the plastic.

Always choose a vase only slightly larger (about 2 fingers larger in diameter) to avoidoverpotwhich would slow growth.

As for the propagationyou can try with the division of the rhizomes or with leaf cuttings. Be careful though: Zamioculcas is slow. Cuttings can also employ several months before developing roots visible.

Warning: Zamioculcas is not pet-friendly!

Zamioculcas contains calcium oxalate crystals which can cause irritation if ingested. It is not lethal to humans and animals, but it is better to keep it away from children and four-legged friends. If accidentally ingested, it can cause mouth and stomach discomfort.
