Buy your Anthurium clarinervium now
During many of our videos, such as the Cheaenomeles, the Peperomia, the Rhipsalis and others, what caught the eye, almost more than the protagonists, was a large plant crouched on the right of the set which, with a certain tendency to steal the scene, casually showed a leaf. A leaf which however was enough to conquer everyone.
What plant are we talking about? Of Anthurium clarinervium!
Oh yes, you will surely have felt that shiver and your pupils will be taking a heart shape. Don’t worry, these are common symptoms when it comes to clarinervium 😉
Anthurium clarinervium
Anthurium clarinevium, a member of the Araceae family, is a houseplant that can easily be defined as «breathtaking» thanks to its unusual foliage. In fact characterized by large dark green leaves, heart-shaped, deeply lobed and with white veins that contrast clearly with the blademaking it unique and spectacular. What’s even better? The leaves have a velvety texture which makes them both aesthetically more beautiful and pleasant to the touch.
Originally from Mexico, it grows as an epiphytic plant, which, as we now know, is a nod to the type of soil that we will need to make it comfortable.
The flowers of the Anthiurium clarinervium
The leaves, as we have now understood, are its great attraction, but not to be overlooked are also the spathe flowers, which emerge from the leaves, further enriching the image of this wonderful plant, giving it a more slender and harmonious appearance.
Let’s take care of Anthurium clarinervium
Some species of Anthurium can become cumbersome in the home and even the calarinervium is not exactly small once grown. Don’t worry though, you can definitely find a place for a similar plant! Just remember that air circulation must be guaranteed to her, she is used to being well exposed to the wind, so she will not appreciate stale air.
To make it grow, however, we must take care of it adequately, how? Let’s find out now!
Light
Anthurium clarinervium loves light, but not direct. The ideal for him are in fact areas of intense indirect light, or filtered sunlight.
In winter, however, this situation changes, as the hours of darkness increase compared to those of light, a little bit of direct light becomes welcome by the plant.
Waterfall
Being an epiphytic plant, it is used to enjoying frequent rains from which, however, it dries quickly thanks to the roots exposed to air currents. At home, of course, we won’t be able to offer her the same conditions, but we can try to make her feel at ease anyway.
First of all, it is essential to underline how Anthurium clarinervium, perhaps even more than the plants we talk about every day, hates water stagnation, precisely for the reason we have just told you about. So after watering you need to make sure that the plant is able to drain the excess water.
To know when it is time to water, simply adopt the classic «finger method», that is, just insert a finger a few centimeters deep into the soil and if it is dry we can proceed.
Humidity
Humidity is a fundamental condition for this plant to remain healthy. It is in fact important to guarantee a good level of humidity. In winter it is necessary to pay attention to the air made dry by the heating of the house by frequently vaporizing the leaves.
Land
Here is another field influenced by the epiphytic nature of this Anthurium. As we said before, the fundamental characteristic of the soil is that it is extremely well draining, at the cost of adding a little extra coarse material (pumice, bark, etc.) to the substrate.
For the base, however, as for almost all houseplants, we recommend Florenpot soil, the inevitable ally specifically designed to offer balanced and optimal soil for your plants.
Temperature
The clarinervium loves to bask in the heat. In fact, its ideal temperature is between 18 and 25°C. It can also resist slightly lower temperatures, around 15°C but it is better not to subject it to similar stress for too long. Even excessive heat can damage the plant, so we pay attention to guaranteeing it an environment that does not reach 40°C in summer.
Fertilization
Fertilizing during growth is important, especially during summer and spring. About once a month (always follow the doses shown on the product label) give liquid fertilizer for green plants combined with wetting water or, if you use granular fertilizer, sprinkle it near the plant.
Pruning
Limited pruning (without exaggerating) can be done to give shape to the plant which perhaps has a tendency to grow a lot. In general, however, it is sufficient to simply remove the dried leaves.
Propagation
The ideal is to proceed with the dividing stems during repottingdelicately loosening the roots and separating the various stems which will then give life to a new plant. To have greater rooting possibilities it is recommended that each stem has at least 1 or 2 leaves.
Propagation from seed is also possible.
I repot
Repotting this plant should be done approximately every 2 years, it has a rather fast growth rate, so don’t put off its move for too long!
Problems
Insects have a certain weakness for the large, hide-and-seek leaves of the clarinervium. It is therefore important to clean the plant often with a special soap and keep it checked to ensure that it has not been targeted by some parasite.
Toxicity
It is a toxic plant in all its partstherefore it is advisable to pay close attention and keep it out of reach of children and animals. Above all, it can prove insidious for those who own cats, due to the calcium oxalate it contains. If ingested it can cause ulcerations in the esophagus and throat.
